so what do you guys think?

yeah, I know, it's cruel of me to suggest that this this is actually IT, but who could resist NOT having a thought of our favorite DUST DEVIL upon viewing that cover.

if you're still reading, the flick appears to be just a run-of-the-mill desert slasher. has anyone seen it?

but that cover... the associations it brought... the dreams of a REAL sequel...

what do you think? should that story EVER be continued, reinterpreted, reimagined, remade...?

Man, that's Andrew Bryniarski (the post-modern Leatherface), voiced by the B-film heavy Danny Trejo!

Seriously, let's see if this turns out to be a DUST DEVIL discussion. Then I might move it up.

DD's storyline could be relatively easily continued, as nagtloper follows a similar pattern as, say, Azazel in the Denzel Washington -vehicle THE FALLEN. One point of interest might be whether physical death of the carrier is the only way for the demon to seek out a new host. He's not place-specific either, and could easily appear in some other corner of the world.

An interesting take would be to have this legacy of a globe-trotting demon pop out in different places as an urban myth or something, with some people actually meeting him either by chance or actually trying to seek him out. He could be out concoting his rituals in a war zone, attacking shellshocked soldiers and displaced locals, living off in some recluse, abandoned villages, existing half-way as an urban legend...

"And the killer of course is not from Africa, he's from elsewhere. I tried to imply this somewhat by having some ruins in the brief shots of the coins he's left on the table that are bits and pieces from different cultures to give the sense that the guy's been around all over the place. I know he would be right at home. I always thought, where would I be if I were the devil? I'd be in Beirut, in Yugoslavia, all the places where the walking man would come to call. Not just Namibia, but no doubt wherever things like that were happening and no one would notice him." - Offscreen

I've said this on many occasions, and I'll say it again: Serbia is a promised land for Stanley, and I'll give my best to try and bring him here, be it for VIY, or for some other project. He seems to have a penchant for out-of-the-beaten-path places, away from the usual tourist-traps, and I'm sure he'd find a lot of inspiration, and potential setting for a good movie or two placed here.
As he has already mentioned (now non-existing) Yugoslavia as one of the potential ideal places for his 'devil', I can only corroborate that: so, if a sequel of sorts is ever considered, I think it would be interesting to see him in a different kind of desert: not literal, but spiritual: to see dust devil roaming a desolate land where a lot of despair leads many to either suicidal thoughts, or to atrocious crimes.
So, places like Serbia, or Romania, or bulgaria, or Russia (see ABANDONED) would be just PERFECT for dust devil's next incarnation.
Much as I like the desert iconography of DD, I think that the sequel, if it's ever made, should be in a different setting.

Just consider this: BELA TARR + A. TARKOVSKY + HOSTEL + NO MAN'S LAND + some local folklore (which could be easily provided, similar to the African lore in DD)...

I know this is just wishful thinking, but still... It's nice dreaming...

One additional thought: Serbia and especially Bosnia were places where the medieval sect of Bogumils existed for a while, before they were exterminated like Cathars in France. In their beliefs they were very similar to original GNOSTICS, whom Stanley likes a lot, and took a lot of inspiration for the DD mythology. He could connect their lore with this locality quite naturally: there are still some Bogumil monuments in Bosnia...

PS: note how that figure on the cover in my 1st post uncannily resembles Stanley's figure! :D

Amusing detail by Stanley on Subversive's DUST DEVIL commentary track; he basically considers DUST DEVIL and HARDWARE are the first two parts of the same trilogy, beginning in a place with no water (and the 'Pray for Rain' sign at the Bethany train station'), moving up to the Zone-like desert where a scavenger has a compass gone awry - heavily resembling Hitch's pocket watch. HARDWARE finally has rain in the end, with a shower scene that could serve as a counterpart for Hitch's R n' R after the first kill. Stanley goes on to say the last part of the trilogy would have a lot of water in it.

Am I stretching by saying the trilogy might be DUST DEVIL - HARDWARE - IN A SEASON OF SOFT RAINS?

In this case, HARDWARE 2 could've been considered as a 'spin-off' in the context of the trilogy, merely further exploring a certain point in time and place of the great continuum.

Stanley: "And the killer of course is not from Africa, he's from elsewhere. I tried to imply this somewhat by having some ruins in the brief shots of the coins he's left on the table that are bits and pieces from different cultures to give the sense that the guy's been around all over the place."

That may have his intent, but the pan is very quick. I recognized the
Chinese coin, because I have a few, but my thought was "A splash of
exotic looking junk across the table. Set Designer on low budget." It's
unkind, I know, but I didn't GET what he intended. I do now.
"...he basically considers DUST DEVIL and HARDWARE are the first two parts of the same trilogy" That is just too big a streeeetch. He should (and I
trust he will) move on.

Sorry guys. Just getting to now read some of these older posts.
You are veteran Stanleyites. I am just playing catch-up.

Cheers Ron in Vancouver

GROUND ZERO is part three. This comes from Stanley himself. It basically explains the connection between HARDWARE and DUST DEVIL and reveals a whole new set of dots to help connect them together. The reason people have a hard time getting the connection is partially because the trilogy has remained unfinished.
