Norm Many thanks for all the info.
Would you know if the 5 disk limited edition set will be available from playusa.com or CDwow.com?

I don't think Scarecrow has an overseas shipping policy and I would prefer to buy from an online retailer that I know.

I do not know if either of those sites are part of our distributor's network. However, I can guarantee you Scarecrow ship's overseas. In fact, they ship everyday and the site is fully secured.

First review of the Subversive disc here. Note that the disc reviewed is a screening copy supplied by Subversive, lacking the extras and the additional discs.

"While it’s impossible to evaluate everything to the letter when there’s only a test disc to work with, all signs point to this massive set being one of the best releases of the year and one of the finest examples of what the DVD medium is capable of."

The ever-amusing Amazon:

# Number of discs: 3

DVD Features:

* Deluxe 5-disc box set including

# 3 of Richard Stanley's most controversial documentaries: THE SECRET GLORY, VOICE OF THE MOON and THE WHITE DARKNESS

[Didn't know there were others, if not as controversial]

# Audio commentary tracks with cast and crew

[What the hell? Stanley's a crew member, but who was in the cast? Norm Hill?]

You can now view the trailers for White Darkness, Voice of the Moon, and The Secret Glory on our website. Just go to the main page, click on the upper right button to Dust Devil and then under trailers, they are numbered 2-4.

All the best,

Norm Hill

P.S. Just to give everyone interested a heads up, looks like we are sold out of the boxed set before it even streets on 9/29.

That P.S. is some rough news to me. I'm happy for you guys that it sold out. But I'd certainly like to get my hands on it. Been looking forward to this package since it was announced. Are there any plans for extending the limited printing of the DVDs? Making more of the box set, basically? If not, are some "Dust Devil" DVDs going to be showing up in some stores? And, if so, which stores will be carrying it?

Thanks for your help.

Dust Devil: The Final Cut boxed set will be hitting store shelves on 9/29. It is available at virtually every online retailer. You may order from there or directly off the Subversive site. They are, in fact, sold out and there are no current plans to do another printing of it.

There will be clips of our new transfer of Dust Devil: the final cut up on DVDTALK's clip of the week next week. You can check it out to see what our new HD transfer looks like.

cheers.

We're currently looking at making some copies available through the site. Mind you, they'd be free of charge (well, perhaps shipping).

If it happens, you'll have Norm (along with his comrade, Herb) over at Subversive to thank.

But I'll get more into it in a few days.

The word is given!

September 22nd, 2006

We have just shipped the last copies of Dust Devil: The Final Cut and the Savage Sinema from Down Under to Ryko. There are no more and there will be no more at this price point ever again.

I am getting frantic daily (sometimes hourly) emails from fans concerned that they will be able to get a copy. What can I tell you? Go get them off the shelf while you can (or off the web). Hell, I even had some Ryko reps say “What do you mean there aren’t any more?”

We warned everyone there would be limited editions at this price, and so they have gone, quickly–Dust Devil even before the street date.

Currently, copies for both sets can be found at all major retailers such as:

Best Buy

Virgin Music

Amoeba Music

Scarecrow Video

Kims Video

Amazon.com

Diabolikdvd

Xploiteddvd

Thanks again for your interest in our films.

Fingers crossed for those who'll miss up for a future reprint, albeit a more pricy one.

Well, I got my copy of the 5 disk set on Monday (courtasy of CD-Wow.com who had it going for £14 - bargain)

Made my way through the 'final cut' of Dust Devil which was by far the best looking trasfer of this film that I have ever seen. To give you an idea of how good it is, I already own the german DVD and the recent UK DVD and this new version is the only version where I noticed just how bald Zakes Mokae was
Suffice to say the picture quality is superb when compared to the other DVD's

One thing though, is this any different to the UK DVD? While watching the Subversive DVD I kept imagining I was seeing new things, but this could have been because more detail is now available.
One thing that stood out to me was after the cattle truck and VW explode and Hitch walks through the wreckage we see a close up of a burning cattle skull, I don't remember that being in previous version? But I haven't had the time to check yet.

One thing I can confirm is that the 'Dust devil Home Movies' feature is actually the making of thats on the German DVD. However Im 90% sure it's a slightly alternate cut, some of the interviews seem a bit extended here and there.

The photo gallery is pretty cool and appears to be a series of shots taken at Richard Stanleys home (?) and include lots of shots of Hitches various knives, poloroids etc as well as the Mark 13 skull.

The interviews with Stanley and Boswell are pretty extensive and as with all material where Stanley talks - it's facinating.

The only down side for me is the commentary, while it's informative, Norm Hill asks Stanley far too many questions that state the obvious. While I seriously appreciate Norms obvious, enormous work on this set, I gotta say... if theres one director who really doesn't need a commentary prompter it's Richard Stanley. someone should get Norm Hill to sit with the likes of Tim Burton on his sleep inducing commentaries :D
I found the UK exclusive commentary to be vastly more laid back and interesting. Maybe this is because I prefer commentaries about the production details of a film rather than the 'more interesting when left unanswered' metaphysical questions that Stanley is asked in the Subversive commentary.

Either way, it's a superb disk.

I've just started watching The Secret glory. The Stanley interview on this is superb. But the feature itself is very bad quality, I don't know if it's the DVD authouring or the original recordings but the sound is downright awful.
Also a large black bar has been added to the bottom of the picture - I assume this is to catch the subtitles as the majority of the feature is subtitled, however the subtitles sit half way above the bar so it makes no sense (although this could be a problem with my DVD player and DVD player generated subtitles)

I know it may sound like Im moaning a lot, but I can assure you all that I am very, very pleased with this set. An absolute must for all Richard Stanley fans.

It's in every version I've seen - though I can't vouch for the Miramax cut, only seen it once.

It should be the same version. Although a longer cut (58') apparently exists, Norm and his hard-working crew were unfortunately unable to retrieve it.

Norm, ask Richard to hook you up with Mark Salisbury, I understand he knows Burton somewhat well.

I'm sure Norm's not afraid of honesty, because this release does deliver at the end of the day, hands down.

HI Pineapple,

As far as Secret Glory goes, the quality is an exact replication of the original. Remember as Richard discusses on the commentary track it is taken from mulitiple films sources: super 8, standard DV, digital, 16mm and has evolved other the years as Richard has tinckered with it. He did put a black bar over the subtitles, but once again...that is the original. I can assure you that it was encoded at a high bit rate and is by far the best representation you are going to get of the film. All of the documentaries exist only in a non-digital format, including VOICE OF THE MOON which is the only one actually shot all the way through on film, but only edited and conformed on analog cassette. As far as the audio goes, we have no problems on my end so my guess would be you are having a problem with your machine.
As far as there being another cut of the film, well I cannot say much about the other releases as I was not involved in them. This was taken from a brand new element straight off of the original camera negative of the Final Cut version of the film.
As far as the documentary goes, we were only able to use with was provided to us. Any longer cut in existence was not available.

Thank you Norm for the exelent Dust Devil box. It is the jewel in my collection.
The one thing that could shine as bright as the Dust Devil box would be a propper Hardware box.
