I was wondering- anyone who collects movies has to have one or two that are more or less scorned by 99% of the population. You know, the kind that people refuse to admit liking (or even seeing). However- regardless of what anyone else thinks, you have this kind of movie on your shelf- and you don't care what anyone thinks. (Or, you hide it from embarrassment)

So, what's in YOUR collection that other people raise an eyebrow at?

I'll go first:

On DVD:
Roadhouse- I can't defend this movie on an intellectual level, so I'll just say that it's entertainment, pure & stupid. Fight scenes and scantily-dressed women (throw in a few explosions for good measure)- what else could a guy ask for when looking for mindless fun?

On Laserdisc:
Tango & Cash- Same as above, but throw in a few hundred excruciating one-liners and the fact that the protagonists seem to be really enjoying themselves (throw in an over-acting Jack Palance for good measure) make this another winner in my book. (Note: "winner" does not necessarily equate to "Oscar material"!)

I Come In Peace (aka Dark Angel)- Yes, this is that Dolph Lundgren movie where something's on fire in almost every frame of the movie. Again, I saw this in the theater (in a double-bill with Hardware, no less!) so I have a tender spot for this completely illogical action movie.

On VHS:
Commando- Oh, come on! Arnold in his prime making a technically inept action movie? This one's hilarious, so bad it's GREAT! :D "I eat green berets for breakfast... and right now, I'm very hungry!" (A Scream! )

Okay, I've bared my soul. Who's next? :)

Anaconda - Why won't people like this film? A tongue-in-cheek attitude, a recognizable B-movie cast and a big rubber snake. Priceless.

Batman (1966) - Words pale in comparison to West & Ward. I pray for the TV series to be released on DVD as well.

Commando - Obviously. One day I'll write a paper of all the homosexual undertones constantly present in the film.

Deadly Heroes - Haven't scored a copy yet, but it's a laugh riot. Directed by Menahem Golan, co-founder of the infamous Cannon Films. The ending redefines patriotism, when the camera moves around the reunited family, revealing three Stars & Stripes in the background, and one on the kid's jacket. You'll have to see it to believe it.

Exorcist II: The Heretic - The most ridiculous end product from such a professional crew you could ever hope for. Boorman's one of my favorite directors when looking at his works from the 60's up until the 80's. Quite fascinating how he could lose touch so completely here - not to mention rebound with - in my eyes - the magnificent Excalibur.

Flash Gordon - Another 80's favorite. Max von Sydow hams it up as a wicked'er-than-thou Ming, with Brian Blessed as a birdman! Bill Hootkins and Richard O'Brien (Rocky Horror) have bit parts. Mike Hodges, another example of a UK director priorly known from tough-as-nails crime stories (Get Carter, as opposed to Point Blank) going bonkers.

Gunmen - Christopher Lambert and Mario van Peebles attempting to be funny. Ironically, they succeed in ways they surely never expected to.

The Hand - Oliver Stone's debut feature. Sir Michael Caine's hand goes AWOL, eventually strangling the director in the middle of a cameo.

--

I'll take five for now. Never intended to make an alphabetical listing, but it started to come out quite easily after the first two.

I'd love to read that paper, sic!

Oh, and I can't believe I forgot this one: (I must have subconciously been trying to forget) The Adventures of Ford Fairlane! Admittedly, I don't find Andrew Dice Clay to be funny, but practically everyone else is this movie helps carry along the sheer hilariousness of it all. Special nod to Robert Englund (who gets killed what, five or six times in the movie and just won't die) and Wayne Newton. (and a prime-of-her-life Lauren Holly for good measure) :)

You should try this for starters: http://ruthlessreviews.com/80saction/commando.php

"But you can't talk about the amazing gayness of Commando without mentioning Bennett. In fact, if I ever go back to school, I will write a paper detailing how the late twentieth/early twenty-first century embracing of homosexuality stems from Vernon Wells' portrayal of this particular character."

How many papers have been in the making during the past twenty years on this subject anyway?

Yes, I'll have to agree with the review, the best line has always been ...

Arnold says, "Listen, loyalty is very touching but it's not the most important thing in your life right now. Gravity is."
Arnold then carries Sully over to a cliff and dangles him over the edge by one leg.
Schwarzenegger says to Sully, "Hey Sully, remember when I said I'd kill you last?"
Sully then says, "Yeah, you promised you'd kill me last."
To which our governor responds, "I lied." .....AAAiiiigggghhhh.....!!!!

Image

Fabulous!!!! :rotflmao:

and .. the whole gay commentary? I'd never conciously ID'd it, but -- it's so right! Bennett is doing the leather-daddy bit with that get-up! :D

I've got quite a bit of guilty pleasures, like both the Critters and Watchers quadrilogy (I suppose I'm the only guy, along with the director himself - maybe - who thinks that the first Watchers wasn't that bad: it was done very well, especially if compared to the 2nd and 3rd).

Another one is CHUD - this one is really great.

About Commando: it's not my favourite movie of Arnie, but it's very funny - especially because it doesn't take itself very seriously. It's much better than some movies with Chuck Norris - like the Missing in Action series. Actually, Invasion USA used to be a movie that I watched a lot during my childhood...

Yes, I had a friend in high school who loved that movie for its badness. He and I would sometimes say something, and end the sentence with, "..it's time to die." Sometimes there's nothing funnier than unintentional humor! :D

Yeah, that movie is filled with unintentional humor: the bad guy that each time has to kill someone, shoot him in the groins. Or the final western-style duel but with rocket launchers instead of revolvers!

And Chuck Norris that disappears and appears (during the final part) like Jason from FRIDAY THE 13TH....

I love my "Horror Express", a nice, old, 1970s Spanish horror movie with Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and Alberto de Mendoza with a cameo by Telly Savalas. It's full of garishly beautiful colors, over-blown and ear-shattering sound effects, great lighting and some pretty decent acting. I recommend it.

I thank you and good night

I remember HORROR EXPRESS, the monster had something of a stare, if I recall correctly. Froze people on the spot or something? Had a nice feel to it, Telly Savalas was a good laugh as he came out of nowhere. And did this film have that great scene with Savalas taking on his guards-turned-zombies with a sabre?

If that's still HORROR EXPRESS, I think I'll have to take another look at it one day.

Oh, I loved "Anaconda"! I really did. I thought it was a decent little movie and a load of fun. One of my "repeat" movies. I never get tired of seeing it.

Jon Voight was cool.

Yes! This is not an ambitious project. But when i was a little boy i loved this one. :P I have the "Mortal Kombat" movie and it's extremely stupid & embarrassing. I watched it one time & i couldn't wait till it ended :? I think the man who "commited" this was desperate. :rotflmao:
