I too am hoping all goes well. It's been almost 20 years, and I hope if Stanley wishes to recut the movie properly, he can access the original negatives & footage. I would imagine these lower-budgeted films get less care by the studios.

Hell, even Blade Runner came damn close to never being re-cut.

HARDWARE:
SPECIAL EDITION

Written and directed by Richard Stanley

Starring Dylan McDermott, Stacey Travis,
Carl McCoy, Lemmy, William Hootkins & Iggy Pop

Out To Own On DVD and Blu-Ray 22nd June 2009

UK DVD PREMIERE

In the post-apocalyptic, post-nuclear world of Hardware, our worst environmental fears have come true. Temperatures hover at a balmy 110 degrees in the shade and the omnipresent radiation has wreaked havoc with the societal gene pool. For your entertainment there is a 24-hour television broadcasting porno films and heavy-metal music videos. Radio offers the rantings and ravings of Angry Bob (Iggy Pop), a lunatic disc jockey who broadcasts bad news all day. Good news has become a thing of the past. If you are looking to escape reality, try smoking the mind-altering “Major Good Vibes” – the painkiller of choice. But, if you’re looking for comfort or safety, forget it: just lock your doors, turn on your super-sophisticated security system and pray that nobody knocks. For in this world, everything can harm you – whether it is the air you breathe, the food you eat, or a seemingly harmless bit of hardware… Upon its release in the US, Hardware became the most successful British independent movie ever released over there. This is the DVD premiere for this cult classic from director Richard Stanley.

Wow. I can't wait ... well, ok, yes I can. I've only been waiting 18 years, 6 months, and 14 days so far!!! (dated from US cinema release).... ..... ... (not that DVDs existed back then, but .. you get the idea.)

This of course will mean that 6857 days will have passed, from the time Hardware came out on the big screen, until an official DVD was released. (I am not counting Laser Paradise's release as official, as they just kind of "snuck" that one out, hoping no one [re: attorneys] would notice.)

So, from September 14, 1990 (a Friday) to June 22, 2009 (a Monday) ...

that comes out to 18 years, 9 months, and 9 days (counting the end date).

Hmmm.. A Numerologist could have a field day with that one, as 18 is two 9's.

Of course, I'm still fantasizing about being able to see Hardware on the Big Screen again. Rumor has suggested that this plan had been scrapped, but I haven't heard anything official, so I'm still propping up my hopes ... [-o<

Now THERE would be a number to see, for Hardware to come full circle ... from Big Screen ... to Big Screen ...

Oh. And ... Blu-ray?!!?!

I think I've just wet myself. Is Optimum's source video going to be able to provide that much more resolution, enough to advertise a Blu-ray version?

Optimum would be working from one of the masters, so I guess this is do-able...

I've been holding out on spending $$$ to get a big HD screen.... but ... if we're going to be able to SEE the Blu-ray difference, I may have to break down and get a HD screen to watch this on!

Thoughts? Opinions?

I haven't gone Blu-Ray yet because I've been unemployed for the past 14 months; I was planning on buying a higher-end model (Pioneer is the brand I swear by) but it looks like the time is not right yet.

After years of watching the not-very pristine laserdisc and that muddy Red Edition DVD, I would imagine that a proper transfer, even in standard definition, would be breathtaking.

Optimum's source is good. Not the best, but good.

Same as with their DUST DEVIL disc, really. The Subversive transfer was slightly better.

A minor update from Optimum:

Stanley has seen and approved their print, as well as recorded a commentary track with producer Paul Trijbits.

There are some interesting extras to be concluded, but the meat and potatoes is that we'd get a solid disc.

Hardware on Blu-Ray too?! If I believed in hell, I'd imagine it's just frozen over...

I made the Blu-Ray plunge over Christmas, and finacially am kind of regretting it, as I haven't had much work since buying the damn TV.
it does look real good though :(

Optimum's release looks like it's going to be better than hoped for!

Now I have to think about this carefully- I could buy the Blu-Ray DVD, but I'd have to wait until I could afford a decent player- which means I couldn't watch the movie until who knows when?

On the other hand, I could get the standard-def version and be happy... but I kinda stopped buying regular DVDs because I'm tired of buying the same movies over and over again every few years. You see, I was into laserdiscs back in the 90's...

was thinking of pre-ordering the disc at Amazon UK in case the price rises/lowers, and found they've got a new image up :)

and a slightly expanded list of extras, as listed on DVD Times a couple of days ago:

Hardware (Special Edition) - Making its UK DVD and Blu-ray premiere, Richard Stanley’s cult classic debuts as a Special Edition with the following extras:
  • Audio commentary with Richard Stanley & Paul Trijbits
  • Deleted, Extended & Behind the Scenes
  • Sea of Perdition
  • The Early Days Richard Stanley Super 8 Movies
  • The Voice of The Moon
  • Original Hardware Promo

hopefully the Shok! comic hasn't been cut from the release.
only just over a month now - fingers crossed this isn't a repeat of the US "release".
