I've said this on many occasions, and I'll say it again: Serbia is a promised land for Stanley, and I'll give my best to try and bring him here, be it for VIY, or for some other project. He seems to have a penchant for out-of-the-beaten-path places, away from the usual tourist-traps, and I'm sure he'd find a lot of inspiration, and potential setting for a good movie or two placed here.
As he has already mentioned (now non-existing) Yugoslavia as one of the potential ideal places for his 'devil', I can only corroborate that: so, if a sequel of sorts is ever considered, I think it would be interesting to see him in a different kind of desert: not literal, but spiritual: to see dust devil roaming a desolate land where a lot of despair leads many to either suicidal thoughts, or to atrocious crimes.
So, places like Serbia, or Romania, or bulgaria, or Russia (see ABANDONED) would be just PERFECT for dust devil's next incarnation.
Much as I like the desert iconography of DD, I think that the sequel, if it's ever made, should be in a different setting.
Just consider this: BELA TARR + A. TARKOVSKY + HOSTEL + NO MAN'S LAND + some local folklore (which could be easily provided, similar to the African lore in DD)...
I know this is just wishful thinking, but still... It's nice dreaming...
One additional thought: Serbia and especially Bosnia were places where the medieval sect of Bogumils existed for a while, before they were exterminated like Cathars in France. In their beliefs they were very similar to original GNOSTICS, whom Stanley likes a lot, and took a lot of inspiration for the DD mythology. He could connect their lore with this locality quite naturally: there are still some Bogumil monuments in Bosnia...
PS: note how that figure on the cover in my 1st post uncannily resembles Stanley's figure!
