February 27: Women’s horror goes into Warp X drive in Britain
Variety reports that the British digital movie company Warp X has begun a new program called Darklight: Women Direct Horror, designed to get more female directors behind the cameras of genre fare. Ten aspiring filmmakers have already been selected from 76 applicants and have attended a weekend “master class” in fright cinema, with the instructors including HARDWARE/DUST DEVIL director Richard Stanley, THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND co-producer Ros Borland and editor Celia Haining, whose credits include the violent revenge drama DEAD MAN’S SHOES (pictured), the first feature from Warp X sister company WarpFilms, and the upcoming Stan Winston-produced THE DEATHS OF IAN. “The residential weekend has been an opportunity for us all to explore the dark, terrifying and thrilling world of horror,” the company’s Cooper Charles told the site, “and will - I hope - be the catalyst for some great films for the Warp X slate.”
Next up for the 10 candidates is another session which will deal with working with actors among other subjects, followed by the selection of four aspirants to develop their ideas into treatments. Warp X plans to have two resulting features before the cameras in 2008. You can find out more about the Woman Direct Horror program at Warp X’s site here.
