Ahh cool so it is based on the Russian story. So there actually three films being made about this film, one actually premiering soon.

There is a SERBIAN version of VIY, it's called SVETO MESTO (A Holy Place), it's a great gothic horror with subtle psycho-perversion instead of infantile almost cheerful fantasy of the Russian version from 1967.

This is especially interesting since in the latest draft, if I'm not mistaken, the story of VIY takes place in KOSOVO (which is still, at least technically, in Serbia), instead of Bosnia.

Sadly it does not include the "Making of..." featurette that is on the German edition.

This is very annoying. 5 discs and couldn't fit in an 18 minute featurette? I religiously watch everything on most DVDs, be they my own or rentals.

My order is in transit, be good to finally see this movie for the first time.

Here is the DVD Compare page for Dust Devil.

The omission of the Making of is old news.

I understand it's included as 'Dust Devil Home Movies', but I'm still to actually see the damn thing (Imagine that ).

There's supposedly a 58-minute version in existence but Subversive was unable to track it down (believe me, we tried).

Received my copy a couple weeks back. What an absolutely choc-a-block set for a mere USD $21. How rare is it to see a DVD with so many extras? I wish more DVDs came with some kind of literature, be it a short story, small comic book, whatever is appropriate for the particular film. Now I have to get around to watching it. I have never seen Dust Devil, and to be honest, I really don't know what it's about (have tried to avoid any reviews or discussion on the film).

So now I'm just waiting (patiently, well, not really) for the 5-disc Limited Collector's Edition of Hardware :D

Got my second copy Saturday as I won it in the competition here on the forum! :D Thanks Sic!!
I didn't know it was released in a black case as well :o
The + point is that the disks are easy to get out in comparison with the transparant case where it's a hell of a job to get them out :?
The - point is that you can't see the reverse side of the cover without removing it.
Does anyone know why it is released in 2 different cases?

Yeah the discs can be rather difficult to extricate.

I'm going to order the R2 set as well. It's like 7 quid so easy decision.

Just started watching. Disappointed there's no subtitles.

The Subversive sound mix is still definetly better than anything we've heard before. Really removes most of the issues with the dialog sound levels.

Easy to compare: The 'fill the bowl' -voices.

Woohoo! I now have both the R1 and the R2 versions.

Anyone know how many R1 versions have been sold, in other words, how many are left?

Now to sit and meditate under a tree until Hardware gets a similar treatment.

My Dust Devil collection:

- UK VHS
- Italian VHS
- German DVD

Add two more discs and all I need is the French tape!

Is this the Italian VHS you're referring to?

There's a copy on eBay I was thinking of snapping up, though according to the seller the sleeve says the running time is 91 minutes - I was under the impression the version known as Demoniaca was the 87-minute Miramax cut? This would be the 95-minute version, adjusting the running time to PAL.

And how cool is that cover art? In a lurid, old pre-cert sort of way, of course. Is it cheeky of a brand new n00b like me asking for a high-res scan of the sleeve?

EDIT: Erm, hello by the way! Only been a Stanley fan for about a year, but really love both Hardware and Dust Devil.

JamesF, that's the one.

I had the same train of thought when I originally bought it (costed around 4€ I think). However, the running time is wrong. The sleeve said 91 min, while it's actually 84, making it identical with the Miramax cut. Would've been interesting to get the Wimbledon cut - though its possible that's the cut the Italian distributor was originally offered, yet they never corrected the running time. Who knows.

A scan is possible, yes. Give me a couple of weeks on that.

Thanks sic, looking forward to it. Have just bought the US VHS off eBay (still saving my pennies for Demoniaca!), looking forward to seeing just how different it is from the Final Cut. Along similar lines, am also thinking about getting the 80-minute US theatrical version of Andrej Zulawski's Possession - if you think Dust Devil had it bad, this film had forty-five minutes cut out of it!

Heh, silly me.

If you have the SubCin Dust Devil, the Italian poster is on the flipside of the artwork.

I can do the scan anyway, I'll check which one's the better source.

If you wouldn't mind sic, that would be lovely. I'm still in two minds whether to buy the VHS (just found an ed2k link I'll give a go instead), but I'm still something of a geek when it comes to looking at alternative sleeve designs for films and that sort of thing.

Watched the Paramount VHS today, and was actually quite surprised - I was expecting it to be awful, but was quite surprised. I'd heard lots of things about it - drastic colour re-grading, eradication of any supernatural element, crap dubbing - most of which turned out to be either exaggeration or just plain untrue. (If anything, the colours are more "normal" and untampered than any other release.)

Naturally, in comparison to the Final Cut, it's less satisfactory in terms of character development and mileau, and gets a little confusing near the end, but for the most part works as a more streamlined version of the same, still undoubtedly beautiful film. There were a few aspects of it I even liked better, like the replacing of the Richard-Stanley-as-dog-Dust-Devil shot with another, moodier shot, given how cheesy the former shot looks in comparison.

I'm still downloading a VHS-rip of Demoniaca, look forward to seeing if there's any differences there too. Have managed to see the first minute or so, and it certainly corresponds with what Stanley's said before about the film being made "more red" to look more like Hardware.

It's interesting that the US VHS is graded more or less as The Final Cut, while Demoniaca is the one that's gone Profondo Rosso ('deep red'). I haven't seen the US cut in a good while, but I do remember one quite hilarious scene.

When Wendy gets into her car in the morning and is startled by Hitch, there used to be a bit in their dialogue during which Hitch opens the passenger-side door. That's gone, for whatever reason. The dialogue still ends with both of them closing their respective car doors and heading off.

Hence, Hitch closes an imaginary car door! :D
