More dark and claustrophobic "Alien" , scary and creepy as " The Exorcist " the film had to be a global success , and instead was one of the worst flop of the director who did do almost bankrupt at Universal Production.
And all this because in the same year was raging on screens "ET" Spielberg and no one was going to believe nell'alieno bad , everyone saw the beings of this world as the tender Pupazzoni to pet and cuddle and not as terrible mutant parasites that dilanino bodies and minds.
John Carpenter directs a fantasy-horror that , at times, seems successful , but has moments a bit ' too slow , they do lose the rhythm of the film. The screenplay by Bill Lancaster tries to give a greater depth to the film . What you do not want to be the only work that scare the viewer, but also a starting point for reflection on the condition of human beings, which does not take much to put into doubt all their certainties , real or fake . For their survival , they are able to question everything, even the loyalty of those who, until five minutes before they called friends.
Their attitude , will lead to self- destruction. Rather than give a hand , as it would be more logical , in trouble crumble , giving vent to their distrust . That being , can never be destroyed , because it is part of human nature . The What , then, is nothing more than our inability to trust those around us , at some point , the real monsters indecipherable seem to be men.
Good performers, especially Kurt Russell, the director's favorite actor , and protagonist of the story.
Very significant is the final scene , with his sarcastic smile that closes the film .
John Carpenter, on the other hand , it shows only part of his talent behind the camera .
Although not in great shape , however , manages to give us two or three memorable scenes , including one where it turns out that one of the members of the base, now considered dead, is owned by the Thing. A tracked advances in the ice blinding . On board there are three people .
A man tells a joke indecent , another ride, the third is intent on listening to the signals from the on-board radio . In the background rhythm to the beat monotonic , like the beating of a heart, which 30 years ago turned a movie of the same title.
It ' a Wagnerian tragedy , is romantic and gothic . E'angosciante and moving.
And ' polyvalent work , which artfully blends elements of various genres and narrative .
The overture of the film consists of a series of stunning images , dominated by the overwhelming music of Wagner's Tristan and Isolde : portraits that look like shots of Helmut Newton and still images of a heartbreaking beauty , give way to an intense slow motion that captures the end the world. Everything in between is the story of how you arrive at this dramatic conclusion .
A story that is based on a photograph of exceptional beauty that captures rides in the fog, two planets that illuminate the night , Melancholia looming on the horizon.
Wonders of the technique in a powerful film that , in many ways , reminiscent of Kubrick 's masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey ."
The cast is stellar and includes, first and foremost, a pair of very talented actresses : Kirsten Dunst , which for this film won the Palme d'Or for Best Actress at the last edition of the Cannes Film Festival, and Charlotte Gainsbourgh , who plays his character with great intensity. Two sisters, two different women : one, Justine , is perpetually depressed and unable to make sense of his life even with the wedding.
The other , Claire, has a husband and a son, loves life and confronts her with the decision. But what happens when a huge planet named Melancholia , is about to hit Earth ? Justine faces the end of the world with seraphic calm , with awareness of who you always expect the worst. For Claire is suffering devastating to know that life is about to end . Everyone reacts in its own way the imminent tragedy. And we do not just have anxiety background .
In the first part, devoted to Justine , the director examines the depression of a woman who , on the day of her marriage , she falls asleep and does a hot bath, while the guests are waiting for the cutting of the cake . The intense close-ups of the actress explores her mood , her not being able to feel part of the reality that surrounds it.
The entire segment of the film shows a beautiful Kirsten Dunst wrapped in a fluffy white dress, kidnapped by the immensity of the cosmos.
The second part, entitled Claire , tells the agonizing wait the end of the world , the impact of Melancholia with the planet Earth. An impact that the director has shown at the beginning and that the viewer hopes that does not happen until the last .
Justine leaves the apathy for a wise resignation that makes the whole deal with greater clarity than her sister Claire, who tried to escape but in the end can not do anything but accept the tragic destiny.
If the first part of the director indulges in a story full of romance - see the beautiful location ( a majestic castle in Sweden) or lanterns floating lights in the night - in the second part teases the audience with a false alarm and then it does fall into the depths of fear, with a gothic , horror movie . The result is an anxiety that pervades the bottom of the story from beginning to end .
They are joined by Josh Brolin as the young Agent K , in a race against time , and especially in the past , to try to defeat the terrible Boris the animal.
