Well, I got my copy of the 5 disk set on Monday (courtasy of CD-Wow.com who had it going for £14 - bargain)
Made my way through the 'final cut' of Dust Devil which was by far the best looking trasfer of this film that I have ever seen. To give you an idea of how good it is, I already own the german DVD and the recent UK DVD and this new version is the only version where I noticed just how bald Zakes Mokae was
Suffice to say the picture quality is superb when compared to the other DVD's
One thing though, is this any different to the UK DVD? While watching the Subversive DVD I kept imagining I was seeing new things, but this could have been because more detail is now available.
One thing that stood out to me was after the cattle truck and VW explode and Hitch walks through the wreckage we see a close up of a burning cattle skull, I don't remember that being in previous version? But I haven't had the time to check yet.
One thing I can confirm is that the 'Dust devil Home Movies' feature is actually the making of thats on the German DVD. However Im 90% sure it's a slightly alternate cut, some of the interviews seem a bit extended here and there.
The photo gallery is pretty cool and appears to be a series of shots taken at Richard Stanleys home (?) and include lots of shots of Hitches various knives, poloroids etc as well as the Mark 13 skull.
The interviews with Stanley and Boswell are pretty extensive and as with all material where Stanley talks - it's facinating.
The only down side for me is the commentary, while it's informative, Norm Hill asks Stanley far too many questions that state the obvious. While I seriously appreciate Norms obvious, enormous work on this set, I gotta say... if theres one director who really doesn't need a commentary prompter it's Richard Stanley. someone should get Norm Hill to sit with the likes of Tim Burton on his sleep inducing commentaries
I found the UK exclusive commentary to be vastly more laid back and interesting. Maybe this is because I prefer commentaries about the production details of a film rather than the 'more interesting when left unanswered' metaphysical questions that Stanley is asked in the Subversive commentary.
Either way, it's a superb disk.
I've just started watching The Secret glory. The Stanley interview on this is superb. But the feature itself is very bad quality, I don't know if it's the DVD authouring or the original recordings but the sound is downright awful.
Also a large black bar has been added to the bottom of the picture - I assume this is to catch the subtitles as the majority of the feature is subtitled, however the subtitles sit half way above the bar so it makes no sense (although this could be a problem with my DVD player and DVD player generated subtitles)
I know it may sound like Im moaning a lot, but I can assure you all that I am very, very pleased with this set. An absolute must for all Richard Stanley fans.
